Torrents of supporters of Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, descended upon the venue of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday.
The jubilant crowd, clad in colorful vests and face caps, carried bold banners and sang solidarity songs in support of Hashim’s potential presidential bid in 2027.
According to the leader of the Hashim Unity Group, Hon. Musa Makanda, the former presidential candidate is a “credible alternative” who Nigeria needs at the moment.
The group praised his leadership qualities, vision, and integrity, urging the party leadership to consider him as the PDP flagbearer for the 2027 presidential election.
He said, “We believe that Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim embodies the finest qualities of leadership within the PDP – vision, integrity, and a consistent track record of advocacy for democracy and good governance.
“We urge the party leadership to emulate his political conduct and prepare him as the PDP flagbearer ahead of the 2027 presidential election.”
In a related development, PDP youth leaders from the 36 states of Nigeria had, in the past week, formally welcomed Hashim to the party.
“We welcome Dr. Hashim to our great party and call on other party leaders to emulate him in his support for the youths of the party as we prepare for 2027,” said a statement signed by the youth leaders.
The supporters’ rally and the youth leaders’ welcome demonstrate growing momentum for Hashim’s potential presidential bid. As the PDP prepares for the 2027 elections, Hashim’s supporters are optimistic that their leader’s credentials and track record of advocacy for democracy and good governance make him an ideal candidate for the party’s presidential ticket.
