Nnamdi Kanu’s fate echoes Saro-Wiwa’s unjust execution, Sowore says

Activist Omoyele Sowore has sounded the alarm about the impending judgment in Nnamdi Kanu’s case, scheduled for November 20, 2025.

In a post he shared via X on Monday, Sowore drew chilling parallels between Kanu’s situation and the 1995 execution of renowned environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists by the General Sani Abacha regime.

Sowore emphasised that despite the passage of three decades, Nigeria’s leaders have failed to learn from past mistakes.

“Thirty years ago, Nigeria witnessed the tragic loss of Ken Saro-Wiwa, a distinguished environmentalist, and eight other Ogoni individuals who advocated for environmental dignity and preservation of rights in the Niger Delta region. He was cruelly hanged by the Nigerian elite through a contrived sham trial,” Sowore wrote.

The activist warned that history may repeat itself if justice is not served in Kanu’s case.

“Despite this incident, Nigeria and its leaders have not learned from their past mistakes, and this November, another life may be compromised in the pursuit of self-determination,” Sowore stated.

Sowore’s concerns are rooted in the upcoming judgment on Nnamdi Kanu’s case, which has garnered significant attention from human rights groups and activists. Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention since 2021, and his trial has been widely criticised as unfair.

The activist’s statement concludes with a call to action, honoring Saro-Wiwa’s memory and advocating for Nnamdi Kanu’s release.

“We honor the memory of Ken Saro-Wiwa and demand that similar tragedies will not be tolerated ever again! #FreeNnamdiKanuNow,” Sowore declared.
