The Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) has dismissed rumours that one of its members, Veteran actor Lere Paimo, is dead.

Earlier, rumours had it that the actor, known otherwise as Baba Eda, died on Friday.

However, the association, through its National PRO, Prince Adejonwo Oluwafemi Femson, rubbished the rumours, stating that the actor’s wife confirmed he is in good health.

He wrote, “Baba Eda, Chief Lere Paimo MFR is NOT Dead.

“We would like to inform the public that reports circulating on Facebook about the passing of Chief Olalere OsunPaimo (MFR) are FALSE.

“We have confirmed with Baba Eda Onile Ola’s wife that he is alive and in good health.”

The association further urged the general public to disregard these “false reports” and be aware that they are being spread by “unscrupulous individuals”.

He added, “Chief Olalere OsunPaimo (MFR), Chairman Board of Trustee Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP), is alive and well

“We urge everyone to verify information before sharing to avoid spreading misinformation.”

Paimo, whose career spanned decades, is celebrated for his commanding screen presence, historical roles, and unmatched contribution to indigenous filmmaking.

Paimo started acting in 1958 when he joined the Oyin Adejobi theatre group, founded by Pa Oyinade Adejobi. Around 1960, while working as a teacher in Osogbo, he formally became part of the group, which performed plays for churches, schools, and cultural clubs.

The following year (1961), he was invited by Duro Ladipo to join Mbari Club, a cultural center, where his acting talent was recognized, earning him leading roles. His breakthrough came in 1963 with the lead role in the epic Yoruba film “Ogbori Elemosho”, cementing his place in Nigerian cinema.
