The Lagos State Government has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, commonly referred to as the Countdown, due to the current challenges facing the country.

The December 31, 2025 event was cancelled by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who asked residents to instead use the time for personal prayers for Nigeria, Lagos State, and its people.

The cancellation was announced in a statement by Gboyega Akosile, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Sanwo-Olu appealed to Lagosians to dedicate the time they would have spent at the event to prayers in their homes and places of worship for the country’s continued prosperity, leadership, peace, productivity and general wellbeing.

The governor, while wishing residents a happy and prosperous New Year, expressed optimism that 2026 would be a better year for Lagos State and Nigeria.

“On behalf of my family, I wish every resident of our dear state a happy and prosperous New Year,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He assured residents that his administration remained committed to improving their welfare, adding that the state government would intensify efforts to deliver dividends of democracy in the coming year.

“I want to assure you all that the year 2026 will be a better year for us in the state, as our administration is determined to work twice as hard to deliver the goods for the residents of the state,” he said.

The governor also called on Lagosians to continue to live together in peace and harmony as the state moves into the new year.
