The Publicity Secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State, Oyeniyi Iwakun, has dumped the party.

Iwakun, who announced his resignation on Wednesday, didn’t give any reason for leaving the party. His resignation letter, dated December 31, 2025, was addressed to the Aye Ward 2 party chairman.

Although Iwakun did not state specific reasons for his decision, he said the move was taken “in good faith and with due respect” to the leadership and members of the party, suggesting a deliberate and carefully considered step.

In the resignation letter, the former publicity secretary expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve, noting that he had contributed to the party’s activities and growth during his tenure.

He also thanked the leadership and members of the SDP for the cooperation and goodwill extended to him while in office.

“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to have served and contributed in my capacity during my time in the party,” the letter read in part.

The letter was copied to key party organs at both the state and national levels, including the Acting State Secretary and State Chairman of the SDP in Ondo State, as well as the National Secretary and National Chairman of the party, underscoring the formal nature of the resignation.

During his time in the party, Iwakun played a prominent role as the spokesperson of the SDP in Ondo State, often articulating the party’s positions on political developments, governance issues and internal party affairs.

His exit, therefore, represents a significant development for the party’s structure and public communication machinery in the state.

As of the time of filing this report, the leadership of the SDP in the state has not issued an official statement in response to Iwakun’s resignation.

More details are expected to emerge in the coming days regarding the next political steps of the former SDP spokesperson and the party’s plan to fill the vacant position.
