The 2026 Grammy Awards was marked by controversy surrounding the attire of Chioma Adeleke, wife of Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
Chioma’s black dress, which appeared to reveal portions of her breasts, drew criticism from some fans and social media users, who questioned the appropriateness of her outfit for the prestigious event.
The backlash was fueled by the perception that Adeleke’s dress code was inconsistent with the more conservative attire worn by her husband, Davido.
Critics argued that the disparity highlighted a double standard in societal expectations of men’s and women’s fashion choices.
One of the critics, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie Success, expressed disappointment over Chioma’s outfit saying, “I am disappointed in Chioma Davido’s dressing: She shouldn’t have been half n*ked to Grammy. She didn’t represent Nigerian culture well, embracing a half n*ked revealing Western style instead.
“As a role model to many Nigerian young ladies, her dressing internationally will negatively influence them. I also expected Davido to guide her better.”
Another netizen, Chioma Henrietta observed, “Man covered himself, and woman opened up. Okooo”
A digital creator, Dayo Ojeniyi, also shared the trending picture on Facebook with the caption, “Still at the Grammy Award, Davido dressed properly while his wife Chioma is half naked.”
Replying Ojeniyi, Resident Media Consultant for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Sayo Akintola, wrote, “Too much money dey turn brain sometimes. The Adeleke family is too descent for this.”
A Facebook user, Nurain Oluseyi said, “I don’t blame the wife, but Davido who allowed naked dressing.”
“Why did Davido allow this shameful dress in the first place? Definitely Davido approved the indecent dressing,” a netizen, Bamidele Fadiyq, asked.
Another netizen, Sulaiman Oladosu wrote, “To all ADELEKE DYNASTY, as you know that people are looking at you as role model and responsible family. Please and please as election is drawing nearer you need to do the needful both public and private gatherings because any small things can go viral and dented images rarely addressed, To Dr ADELEKE and co, it’s high time you guide and check indecent dressing of your wife Chioma. It’s moral decadence of highest order as the people are looking at you as most cultured and responsible family.” (sic)
Prince Waley wrote, “What was Davido and Chioma thinking? You are going for such a Big Event in order to claim one of the biggest awards which you represent Africa! There are over a thousand fashion sense from Africa especially Nigeria that will give both of them a unique design that even the audience will admire them rather they choose to go there as a sold out!“ (sic)
However, a segment of the public defended Chioma, pointing out that Davido had not publicly objected to her attire, and that her fashion choice was a personal decision.
The incident has reignited discussions around gender equality, fashion, and the scrutiny faced by women in the public eye.
The Grammys, an esteemed event in the music industry, often feature bold and daring fashion statements.
