The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, led a delegation of dignitaries to receive the remains of Senator Barinada Mpigi at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The late senator, who passed away in London on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the age of 64, was received by top government officials and friends.
According to Lere Olayinka, the Media Aide to the FCT Minister, in a post he made via Facebook on Monday, Wike, along with other prominent figures, arrived at the airport early Monday morning to receive the body of the deceased senator.
“FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, led other dignitaries to receive the body of Senator Barinada Mpigi at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, this morning,” Olayinka wrote.
He said the Minister had earlier demonstrated his commitment to ensuring a befitting farewell for the late senator by visiting his wife and children in London last week Thursday.
During the visit, Wike conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and oversaw arrangements for the transportation of Senator Mpigi’s body to Nigeria.
Senator Barinada Mpigi, a dedicated public servant, served his country with distinction before his passing.
His death has been met with an outpouring of tributes and condolences from across the nation.
The late senator’s body will be laid to rest in a ceremony that is expected to draw dignitaries from across the country.
The exact date and details of the funeral arrangements have not been disclosed, but it is expected to be announced in the coming days.
