Activist lawyer Aisha Yesufu is raising concerns over the alarming casualties among Nigerian soldiers, urging the National Assembly to take immediate action as the country loses its troops at a “sickeningly alarming rate”.
Yesufu, in a post on X, questioned the response of lawmakers who were elected to represent and protect the interests of citizens.
She questioned whether the National Assembly had called in the authorities to explain what is going on, and what they are doing legislatively to protect soldiers and their families better.
Yesufu also raised concerns about the fate of families left behind by fallen troops, urging lawmakers to clarify what support systems are in place for the relatives of slain military personnel.
According to her, the situation is further compounded by what she described as a passive legislature, warning that while the absence of decisive leadership from a commander-in-chief is troubling, a “controlled and inactive” National Assembly could be equally damaging.
Her comments come amid growing public concern over security challenges and the safety of military personnel deployed across various operations in Nigeria.
She wrote, “We are losing our soldiers at a sickeningly alarming state. Where is the National Assembly? They were voted to be the people’s representatives and protect the interests of the people!
“Who have they summoned to ask them what is going on? What laws have they made to ensure soldiers and their families are protected?
“What happens to the families of our slain heroes? What is the National Assembly doing to protect their interests.
“It is one thing not to have a Commander-In-Chief, it is another disastrous thing to have a passive and controlled National Assembly.”
