Aisha Yesufu: Obi’s demand for congresses before convention fuelled Labour Party crisis

Social activist, Aisha Yesufu, on Wednesday emphasised the importance of due process in political party administration, citing past internal disagreements within the Labour Party.

In a post shared on X, Yesufu recalled that the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Peter Obi, had insisted on proper procedures being followed before the party’s national convention.

“I woke up this morning and remembered that all Mr Peter Obi asked of Abure in Labour Party was that ward, local government and state congresses must be done before the National Convention. That was the bone of all that contention,” she wrote.

Her remarks referenced the leadership of the party under its National Chairman, Julius Abure, and the internal disputes that trailed the conduct of party congresses and convention processes.

Yesufu stressed that adherence to laid-down procedures remains critical for transparency and accountability in political organisations. “Nothing beats due process, even if it will not favour you, follow it. It keeps things transparent and accountable,” she stated.

She further noted that recent developments within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where ward, local government and state congresses were concluded before the national convention, brought the issue back to mind.

“Seeing ADC conclude its ward, LG and State congresses before the National Convention reminded me of it,” she added.

Her comments come amid ongoing discussions around internal democracy within political parties in Nigeria, with stakeholders continuing to call for strict compliance with party constitutions and electoral guidelines to strengthen democratic processes.
