The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that political groups cannot legitimately claim opposition status without demonstrating electoral success at the polls.
Wike made the assertion on Friday during a visit to the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wadata House in Abuja, where he met with members of the party’s newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC).
Addressing party leaders, the former Rivers State governor stressed that credibility in opposition politics must be earned through victories in elections rather than declarations or alliances.
“You cannot become an opposition party without winning an election. Those who say they are leading the opposition have not contested any election successfully,” he said.
He maintained that electoral performance remains the most reliable benchmark for political relevance in a democratic system.
During the visit, Wike also reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, stating that his presence was intended to demonstrate solidarity with the new leadership as it works to stabilise the party following internal disputes.
“My coming here is to reassure you of my support. I have come to pledge my loyalty to the National Working Committee,” he stated.
The minister acknowledged that the party had recently grappled with internal crises but expressed optimism that it was gradually overcoming its challenges.
“Yes, we have crisis, and we have almost come out of it. It will require hard work and sacrifice to move the party forward,” he said.
He urged the leadership to prioritise reconciliation efforts, particularly by reaching out to aggrieved members who had defected, noting that many still have an interest in returning.
“Reach out to them. Most are concerned about opportunities, including tickets. You know what to do,” Wike advised.
He further encouraged party leaders to remain focused despite ongoing political and legal battles, expressing confidence in the PDP’s resilience.
“We have defeated them at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. The same God will see us through. Stay focused and work as a team,” he added.
In his response, the PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, said the new leadership is committed to repositioning the party and restoring public confidence ahead of future elections.
