The Presidency on Wednesday clarified that former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, voluntarily stepped down from their positions, contrary to reports suggesting they were dismissed.
In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, it was disclosed that Edun resigned on health grounds before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved his replacement on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Edun, who recently turned 70 and has been dealing with health challenges, formally submitted his resignation letter on his birthday after meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa.
Edun wrote, “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected.
“I wish you and the administration every success in the future.”
The statement added that Edun held a valedictory meeting with the President before departing to focus on his private business interests.
Similarly, Dangiwa was said to have resigned his appointment and expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.
The Presidency highlighted the professional backgrounds of both men, noting Edun’s extensive experience in finance and investment banking, as well as Dangiwa’s career in housing development and public service, including his previous role at the Federal Mortgage Bank.
President Tinubu commended both former ministers for their contributions to the administration’s economic reform agenda and wished them well in their future pursuits.
The President also tasked the newly appointed Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, with sustaining ongoing reforms and driving fiscal policies with “renewed focus, discipline, and innovation.”
Meanwhile, Tinubu is expected to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma as Minister of Housing to the National Assembly for confirmation.
