Voters, not Wike, will decide next Rivers gov – ADC

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has pushed back against comments attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding the 2027 governorship succession, stressing that the power to choose a governor lies solely with the electorate.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, the state chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Chukwudi Dimkpa, maintained that leadership in a democratic system is determined through the ballot, not by the preference or influence of any individual.

Dimkpa said the ADC is positioning itself as a credible alternative in the state’s political landscape, anchored on transparency, internal democracy, and inclusive participation.

He noted that the party is focused on building a broad-based movement that aligns with the aspirations of Rivers residents.

Addressing the issue of zoning, the party leader acknowledged its importance in promoting balance and inclusion—particularly between riverine and upland communities—but emphasised that fairness must go hand in hand with competence.

He added that the ADC would adopt a consultative process in selecting its governorship candidate, with the aim of presenting a widely acceptable and capable aspirant who can deliver effective governance.

Dimkpa further stated that the party would, at the appropriate time, make decisions that foster unity and strengthen democratic values across the state.

The ADC also underscored that governance, security, and economic development remain top priorities for the people, urging that leadership choices ahead of the 2027 elections should reflect these pressing concerns.
