The arm of a truck driver was amputated on Saturday following an accident that saw his vehicle fall off the Pen Cinema Bridge in the Agege area of Lagos.

The truck, with number plate DD 523 AS, was laden with empty cartons when it crashed onto two mini commercial buses with number plates SMK 925 YD and KRD 273 YJ.

According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, distress alerts were received at the LASEMA Command and Control Centre, Alausa, around 08.35am following which the state’s emergency response plans were activated.

“One adult male (the truck driver) sustained severe injuries, including amputation of his hand. The injured driver was given immediate medical attention by LASAMBUS and transported to the nearest hospital.

“Safety measures were activated at the incident scene to mitigate against any secondary incident. The trapped individual was extricated by the LASEMA’s Tiger Response Team. A medical emergency was conducted on the spot of the incident. The injured driver has been successfully rescued.

“The accident vehicles have been recovered from the incident scene with the agency’s heavy-duty equipment (Metro). The two mini buses (Korope) have been recovered to the Elere Police Station for further investigation and safekeeping, while the split contents of the truck have been cleared from the road to the lay-by and placed in the custody of police officers at the incident scene.”

It added that following the conclusion of the recovery operation, normal vehicular activities had resumed at the scene.
