Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has strongly denounced the fatal shooting of 28-year-old musician, Oghenemine “Mena” Ogidi, by a police officer in Effurun, calling for justice and accountability.
In a statement released on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, the governor expressed shock over the incident, stressing that no Nigerian should be subjected to unlawful violence by security operatives.
He described the killing as a “barbaric” act and a serious breach of the sanctity of human life.
“The killing of Mena Ogidi by ASP Nuhu Usman is unwarranted, unprovoked, and barbaric. It is unlawful and a grave violation of the sanctity of human life,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.
Oborevwori extended condolences to the bereaved family, assuring them of the state government’s support.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring that justice is served.
“No citizen deserves such brutality. The protection of lives remains a top priority under this administration,” he added.
The governor also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force for taking swift disciplinary steps.
These include the recommendation for the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the incident, which has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for approval.
He further assured that the Delta State Government would monitor the case closely until its conclusion and continue to uphold the rule of law.
According to reports, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when police operatives from the Effurun Area Command reportedly acted on intelligence concerning Ogidi.
He was said to have been intercepted while attempting to send a parcel allegedly containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
During the operation, ASP Nuhu Usman reportedly opened fire, resulting in Ogidi’s death.
