An emergency meeting of key stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently underway in Asokoro, Abuja, as the Makinde-led bloc of the opposition party moves to address its deepening leadership crisis.
The high-level meeting has in attendance principal organs of the party, including the Board of Trustees (BoT), the PDP Governors’ Forum, members of the National Assembly caucus, the National Executive Committee (NEC), the National Caucus, state chairmen, and ex-officio members.
In a major development, the BoT, led by its Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, has announced a temporary takeover of party affairs pending the constitution of a caretaker committee, in a bid to stabilise the party and preserve its institutional integrity.
The emergency talks come on the heels of a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court, which nullified the PDP national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025 and sacked the factional national executive led by Tanimu Turaki.
In its judgment delivered in Abuja, the apex court declared the convention unconstitutional and void, effectively invalidating all decisions and outcomes from the exercise, including the emergence of the Turaki-led leadership.
The convention, held between November 15 and 16, 2025, had produced a parallel leadership structure, worsening divisions within the party over control of its national apparatus.
With the ruling setting aside the Turaki-led executive and all offices created during the convention, the PDP’s internal crisis has entered a new phase, prompting urgent intervention by stakeholders aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
The party has been grappling with prolonged leadership disputes, with rival factions laying claim to legitimacy—an impasse that has triggered multiple legal battles and heightened political tensions in recent months.
Political observers say the Supreme Court decision could reset ongoing reconciliation efforts, as party leaders seek to reposition the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.
Further details are expected as deliberations at the stakeholders’ meeting continue and the party moves to formally respond to the court’s verdict.
