Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday paid glowing tribute to late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing him as an icon of integrity, a selfless patriot and a servant leader whose legacy continues to inspire Nigeria 16 years after his death.

In a statement marking the anniversary of Yar’Adua’s passing, Jonathan said the late president was not only his boss but also a brother and worthy partner in service.

“Today marks 16 years since our nation lost a dear hero, an icon of integrity, a selfless patriot, and a man I was privileged to call not just my boss, but my brother and worthy partner in service,” Jonathan said.

He noted that both leaders shared a common passion for building a Nigeria where justice would be experienced by all citizens and not remain a mere slogan.

“As I reflect on the passing of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, I am reminded of the shared passion we both held for a Nigeria where justice is not a slogan, but a lived reality for every citizen,” he stated.

Jonathan said their partnership in government was built on a vision of an inclusive, united and just nation, adding that Yar’Adua believed strongly in the rule of law and the sanctity of the ballot.

“Our partnership was anchored on a common vision: to build an inclusive, united, and just nation. Yar’Adua was a man of quiet but profound conviction who believed that the strength of a country is measured by its commitment to the rule of law and the sanctity of the ballot,” he said.

The former president further described Yar’Adua as a humble leader who consistently placed national stability above personal or political interests.

“He did not just lead; he served with a humility that is rare in the corridors of power, often putting national stability above personal or political gain,” Jonathan added.

He also praised the late president’s peace-building efforts, saying Yar’Adua understood that nation-building required sincerity, courage and a willingness to address national challenges.

Jonathan urged current and future leaders to learn from Yar’Adua’s example, stressing that leadership must be rooted in transparency, accountability and love for the people.

“For leaders, the life of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua serves as an enduring lesson. His example teaches us that leadership is a sacred trust, and that progress is only sustainable when it is rooted in transparency, accountability, and a genuine love for the people,” he said.

He prayed for the repose of the late president’s soul and called on Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals Yar’Adua championed.
