Doctor, woman disagree over child theft allegation

A medical doctor, Dr Timothy Zeje of Divine Reign Clinic, Sauka, Abuja has been accused of stealing one of a set of twins delivered at his clinic.

However, Zeje denied the allegation

Mrs Eunice Bright made the allegation on Thursday during a news conference in Abuja.

According to her, she registered for antenatal at the clinic and scans showed that she had a set of twins.

“I did my scan there at the hospital and Zeje told me that I was carrying a set of twins.

“This was confirmed the following month when I did the second scan,’’ she told newsmen.

“I wanted to take the result home to show to my husband but the doctor initially refused.

“I was able to convince him, but he insisted that I should bring it back the following day, which I did. I was later told that I would be delivering the babies through Caesarean Section.

“On June 11, 2022, I went to the hospital for the CS, and it was successful,’’ she told newsmen.

She said she was surprised when one of the nurses collected one of the babies’ clothes and two shawls.

“I asked why she wanted the materials and she told me that the second baby was sick.

“She said the baby would be put on life support; therefore, she needed it to cover the baby.

“After I regained consciousness from the CS, I asked for my twins, and my husband told me that it was only one child that was handed over to him. I was shocked,’’ she said.

She said, unfortunately, the baby that was handed over to her husband had difficulty breathing, so they were referred to Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital.

Bright said because of her condition, she could not accompany her husband to Gwagwalada.

“After my husband left with the baby for Gwagwalada, I asked one of the nurses for my second baby, and she told me that the baby died after birth.

“She said the doctor stopped them from telling me because I was yet to fully recover from the surgery,” she said.

According to her, things changed dramatically when she took one of the twins to the hospital for immunization only to see the doctor’s wife carrying a baby that looked exactly like her baby.

She said that she noticed that the baby also had dreadlocks like hers.

According to her, on getting home, she narrated her observation to her husband, who promised to look into the matter.

“When we later confronted the doctor, he refused to release my child to me.

Meanwhile, Mr DonClem Enamhe, a convener of “Who is Who in the Northern Cross River State, said the child would be handed over to Bright if a DNA test supports her claims.

Enamhe, who is also the initiator of `Think Cross River’, said his organisation supports equity and justice, adding that no Nigerian has the right to intimidate another, irrespective of his social standing.

When contacted, Zeje told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was aware of the allegations against him but denied it.

He told NAN that the matter was being handled by the Criminal Investigation Department of Nigeria Police, FCT Command.
