Human rights activists, Omoyele Sowore, Deji Adeyanju and Dan Bello have led some Nigerians to protest for an increase in the salary and arrears of police officers in the country.
The protesters took to the streets of Abuja early Monday to request a review of the salary of policemen in the country, especially junior officers.
They were chanting several protest songs and carried diverse placards to demand an increase.
The protesters have marched to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, demanding to meet with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Earlier, Sowore called on both serving and retired police officers to join a protest he organised to combat low salary payments in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
He noted that the focus of the protest would be to demand an increase in salary for all officers, adding that no policeman should earn less than N300,000 to N500,000.
He wrote, “To All Nigeria Police Officers — Serving and Retired. You have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to break free from slavery.
“No police officer should earn less than ₦300,000 to ₦500,000 monthly. Mark your calendars:
#POLICEProtest — July 21st, 2025.
This is your date with destiny. Stand up. Demand justice. Fight for your worth.”
Several Nigerians have campaigned against the low incomes earned by policemen in the country. It is often cited as a contributing factor to the alleged corruption and other issues within the force.
While there have been efforts to increase salaries, the current levels are still considered inadequate by many.
