A fuel-laden tanker explosion on Monday reportedly killed many in the Dan Magaji area of Zaria, Kaduna state.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 AM, near Rochas Foundation School, along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass, from Kwangila to Dan Magaji.

The publication disclosed that the accident involved two tankers and two passenger-filled Golf cars.

Quoting eyewitnesses, Zagazola Makama said the collision triggered five loud explosions, followed by a massive fire that sent thick plumes of smoke billowing over the highway.

“All the occupants of the cars died on the spot, except one driver who survived but sustained severe burns,” a witness told the publication.

The area has been cordoned off by emergency responders, security agencies, and fire service personnel.

Also, motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the route as rescue and recovery efforts continue.

As of the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties had yet to be confirmed.
