The Nigerian film industry, popularly known as Nollywood, is facing criticism from one of its own, veteran actress Bimbo Akintola over the industry’s alleged shift in focus from creativity and storytelling to glamour and materialism.
According to Akintola, the passion and dedication that once drove Nollywood actors are now gone, replaced by a focus on outward appearances. She cited the increasing popularity of cosmetic procedures like Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL) as evidence of this shift, with many actors prioritising physical appearance over talent and storytelling.
“Nollywood now is about looks, not content. The industry has changed, and it’s no longer about the passion and love for the craft. It’s all about glamour and materialism,” Akintola told The Nation.
Akintola contrasted the current state of Nollywood with the passion and dedication she observes in stage actors, who prioritise delivering their best performances.
She recalled the early days of the industry, where actors worked tirelessly without regard for sleep, food, or long hours, driven by a desire to make a difference.
The actress’s sentiments have sparked online discussions, with many reacting to her views on the current state of Nollywood. Some have praised her for speaking the truth, while others have shared their own experiences and opinions on the matter.
As the Nigerian film industry continues to evolve, Akintola’s comments have raised important questions about the future of Nollywood and the values that drive it.
Meanwhile, Actress Etinosa Idemudia, on Friday, celebrated the success of her recent liposuction surgery.
