Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statewide broadcast on Friday, the governor announced that he moved to the party alongside members of his cabinet and officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
According to him, the defection is aimed at strengthening governance, fostering unity, and aligning the state with what he termed broader national development priorities.
The announcement lays to rest speculation on the governor’s plan to defect to the ruling party.
Earlier in the week, 15 lawmakers of the Adamawa state house of assembly, including Bathiya Wesley, speaker of the house, and Buba Jijiwa, his deputy, resigned from the PDP.
The lawmakers attributed their defections to the “lingering crisis” in the PDP.
With Fintiri’s defection, the PDP is now left with three governors.
Meanwhile, political observers say the mass movement of government officials alongside the governor signals a significant shift in party dominance within the state, with potential implications for upcoming political activities and elections.
