Alleged organ harvesting: Sowore’s claims untrue, police respond

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as baseless and previously investigated allegations of organ harvesting made by activist Omoyele Sowore.

The claims, which targeted a police officer, were described by Nkeiruka Nwode, spokesperson of the Nigeria Police, Force Headquarters Annex Lagos, as “fabricated” and part of a pattern of spreading false information.

Sowore had previously submitted a petition to the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, calling for an investigation into Nwode, a Chief Superintendent of Police, over alleged ties to a purported police-linked organ-harvesting syndicate.

In a statement posted on social media on Monday, Sowore alleged that Nwode conspired with individuals within the judiciary to imprison whistleblower Nnamdi Emeh after he exposed the alleged crime.

Emeh is reportedly being detained at a prison facility in Awka. Sowore alleged that certain police officers, with the assistance of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, were complicit in the purported injustice.

Sowore called on the police chief to discontinue what he described as a “sham prosecution” and instead investigate and prosecute officers allegedly involved in the matter.

Nwode responded to the allegations, stating that she typically ignores online publications and speculation, but decided to address the issue due to her name being repeatedly implicated in what she termed “false allegations”.

She reiterated that the allegations were subject to a thorough investigation by the Nigeria Police Force in 2023, which yielded no evidence of organ harvesting or any misconduct on her part.

“For the sake of clarity, the NPF conducted a full investigation into the claims that circulated in 2023. The outcome clearly established that there was no confirmed evidence of organ harvesting and no evidence linking me to any misconduct,” she said in a statement.

Nwode added that the outcome of the investigation, which she said cleared her of the allegations, remains part of official records.

She also noted that Sowore’s Media Outfit, Sahara Reporters, which published Mr Sowore’s allegations against her had also previously acknowledged in another report that the investigation found no evidence against her.

According to her, she first became aware of the Police report exonerating her through the same media outfit on February 24, 2026, just like many members of the public.

Nwode further described it as “unfair and absurd” that her photograph was placed alongside that of the individual who made the accusations, saying the claims had in the past caused distress and reputational harm to her and her family.

She maintained that she remains committed to her professional responsibilities and would not be distracted by attempts to revive allegations that have already been addressed through institutional processes.

“The truth is documented, and those who are genuinely interested in fairness and due process can easily verify the facts. In every circumstance, the rule of law must prevail,” she said.

Despite the controversy, Nwode said she holds no personal animosity toward Sowore and continues to regard him with respect.

“I trust that fairness and truth will always prevail,” she added.
