APC convention will showcase Tinubu’s reforms, says Dogara

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has said the upcoming 8th National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will serve as a defining moment to highlight the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while also encouraging critical reflection on the party’s performance in government.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Friday, Dogara framed the convention as more than a routine political gathering, describing it as an opportunity to present what he called “compelling stories” of governance under Tinubu.

According to him, Nigerians should expect detailed accounts of how the administration’s policies have impacted lives, particularly in areas such as human development, infrastructure, and economic support initiatives. He pointed to programmes like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), major road projects including the coastal highway and the Sokoto–Badagry corridor, as well as funding support for youth- and women-led businesses, as evidence of what he described as transformative governance.

Dogara noted that beyond showcasing achievements, the convention would also provide room for “deeper introspection” within the APC, allowing party leaders to evaluate their stewardship and strengthen internal accountability mechanisms ahead of future political contests.

Addressing concerns about alleged exclusion of aspirants within the party, the former Speaker dismissed the issue as an internal matter, insisting it should be resolved within party structures. He also defended the adoption of the consensus model in selecting candidates, stating that it aligns with legal provisions while promoting unity, though he acknowledged that any shortcomings identified in its implementation should be addressed.

On speculation that the ruling party may be working to limit political competition ahead of the 2027 elections, Dogara rejected such claims, maintaining that the APC values a vibrant opposition as a necessary condition for democratic accountability. He stressed that there is no deliberate attempt by the party to weaken opposition forces.

Dogara also clarified ongoing discussions about political alignments, stating that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is not a registered member of the APC, as his name does not appear in the party’s official database.

While advocating inclusiveness in governance, he argued that competent Nigerians should be given opportunities to serve regardless of party affiliation, emphasizing merit over partisan considerations.

On his personal political future, Dogara downplayed any ambition for higher office, saying his focus remains on participation and service, guided by personal conviction.

He further described reports of a possible defection by the Bauchi State governor as speculative, noting that no formal discussions have taken place within the party. Similarly, he dismissed bribery allegations against the Foreign Affairs Minister as unsubstantiated, challenging accusers to provide credible evidence rather than relying on speculation.

Overall, Dogara positioned the APC convention as both a showcase of achievements and a platform for internal reflection, as the ruling party begins to shape its narrative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
