APC rejects impeachment move against Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected a reported move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara, warning that such an action would destabilise the state government.

In a statement issued by the party’s Rivers spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC emphasised that the legislature has a role in governance, but should not be used to undermine the government.

“We solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy,” Nwauju said, adding that it would be “totally untenable” for the party to stay silent amid the developments.

The statement highlighted the current budgetary situation, noting that the National Assembly had approved a budget for Rivers State in July 2025, covering expenses until August 2026.

“Interestingly, this budget is for one year and should run up till August 2026 and if the Governor is comfortable with the composition of the said budget, he may elect not to present any supplementary budget,” Nwauju explained.

Nwauju also cited constitutional provisions allowing a governor to spend up to six months into a new fiscal year without a new budget. “Besides, the constitution allows for a six-months spending window into the new fiscal year by a state governor,” he said.

The APC spokesperson urged APC members in the Rivers State House of Assembly to resist external pressures and reject the impeachment move.

“We therefore strongly advise all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly especially APC members, to resist pressures from outside the Assembly chambers to destabilise the Government of Rivers state ably led by His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara,” he said.

Nwauju warned against dragging the party’s image through the mud, emphasizing the need to prioritize the state’s progress.

He added, “Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the government of Rivers State, which is an APC government, is not destabilized through fratricidal disagreements.”

The statement concluded with a call for the state to remain a democracy. “Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy!!!” Nwauju declared.
