The Nigerian Army has warned the public against fraudulent social media accounts impersonating senior military officers, describing the activities as a deliberate attempt to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
In a statement posted on its official X page on Sunday, the Army said fraudsters were operating fake Facebook accounts in the name of the Deputy Chief of Standards and Evaluation (Army), Major General Raymond Terungwa Utsaha, while also using the photograph of the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Major General Bamidele Alabi.
The Army stated that the fake accounts were created with malicious intent to deceive members of the public through false representations and unauthorized online engagements.
It cautioned Nigerians against responding to any communication, friend requests, financial solicitations or unofficial engagements originating from the accounts.
According to the statement, senior military officers do not conduct official transactions, award contracts, request financial assistance or handle sensitive official matters through personal social media platforms or unofficial online channels.
The Army urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious accounts and activities to relevant security agencies.
It added that necessary measures would continue to be taken against individuals and groups involved in cyber impersonation and other fraudulent activities.
