A dramatic coup attempt in the Republic of Benin was thwarted on Sunday, December 7, 2025, as forces loyal to President Patrice Talon swiftly regained control of the situation.
Mutineers in military uniform, led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri, briefly seized the national television station in Cotonou, announcing the dissolution of the government and suspension of the constitution.
However, their bid to overthrow President Talon’s democratic government failed after they were unable to breach the presidential residence.
The National Guard quickly moved in, surrounding the TV station where the mutineers are now holed up.
According to reports from 24 Hours In Benin, discussions are underway with the rebels.
Interior Minister Alassane Seidou confirmed that the armed forces had foiled the coup attempt, while Foreign Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari assured that the situation is under control, with a “large part of the army still loyalist”.
President Talon is reportedly safe, with his office stating that the “regular army is regaining control” and the city and country are secure.
The attempted coup follows recent political tensions, including a controversial extension of presidential terms from five to seven years.
