Innocent Idibia, renowned music icon known as 2Baba, has intervened in the ongoing discourse surrounding the comparison between Wizkid and the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, deeming the discussion “ridiculous”.
During an appearance on the Mic On podcast, 2Baba expressed his views, saying comparing Wizkid to Fela Kuti is unfair to both artists and disrespects Fela’s legacy.
The debate intensified after Wizkid responded to criticism from Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, stating he’s “bigger” than Fela.
2Baba stressed that both Fela and Wizkid should be celebrated for their distinct contributions to Nigerian music, noting the differences in their eras, styles, and industry impact.
According to 2Baba, placing Fela and Wizkid side by side ignores the distinct contexts and environments in which they created their music.
2Baba emphasised that such comparisons are counterproductive and overlook the unique accomplishments of both artists.
He urged fans and critics alike to recognise and celebrate the distinct legacies of Fela and Wizkid, allowing each artist to be judged on their own merit.
“Comparing Fela with Wizkid is ridiculous. Apart from the fact that it is disrespectful to Fela, and at the same time, it is also unfair to Wizkid,” 2Baba expressed.
