The Delta State Police Command has launched a comprehensive search operation for Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona, and members of an armed group allegedly involved in a violent confrontation in Asaba that resulted in the deaths of three youths.
A statement issued on Tuesday by SP Bright Edafe revealed that the incident happened on Monday, November 24th, when a group allegedly led by Chief Jerry Nkeeshe stormed a parcel of land at Okwe community along the Asaba-Onitsha Road.
Initial investigations indicate that the group, comprising vigilantes and alleged cult members, some of whom were dressed in army camouflage, attempted to forcibly enforce an unauthorized quit notice on the land.
The statement noted that the operation was carried out “without any court order”.
Resistance from youths in the community led to a confrontation. The armed men allegedly opened fire indiscriminately, leaving three young men with severe gunshot injuries. “They were confirmed dead while receiving treatment at the hospital,” the police said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, immediately ordered the deployment of tactical teams, intelligence operatives, and specialised investigators to locate and arrest all individuals connected to the attack.
Describing the killings as “an unprovoked, reckless, and brazen display of lawlessness”, CP Abaniwonda vowed that the Command would not bow to intimidation or influence.
“We will not relent until every perpetrator of this violence, irrespective of title or backing, is apprehended and made to face the full weight of the law,” he said.
He urged residents of Onicha-Olona, Asaba, and surrounding communities to support the ongoing operations.
“We call on members of the public to provide credible information. This Command will not tolerate any act capable of threatening the peace and safety of our communities,” he added.
Normalcy has been restored in the area, the police said, adding that they have stepped up surveillance, patrols, and search operations to maintain peace.
Citizens with information on the suspects’ whereabouts are urged to contact the Command via its dedicated emergency line: 08036684974.
The statement reaffirmed the Delta State Police Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
