Dreadlocks not allowed in Minna, says Niger gov

The Governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, has asked those with dreadlocks to leave Minna, the state capital or be arrested by security operatives to arrest.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ security meeting held at the government house on Tuesday, Bago said security operatives should cut the dreadlocks of such arrested residents and impose fines on them.

The Niger governor said his administration has zero tolerance for rascality.

He said, “Anybody that you find with dreadlocks, arrest, barb the hair, and fine the person.

“Nobody should carry any kind of haircut inside Minna. I have given marching orders to security agencies.”

Dreadlocks, also known as dreads or locs, are a hairstyle characterized by ropelike strands of hair that are twisted, knotted, or matted together. They are a cultural hairstyle with roots in various cultures and are often associated with spirituality, freedom, and cultural identity.

Dreadlocks can form naturally due to the way hair tangles or can be created through techniques like twisting, braiding, or backcombing.

Dreadlocks are not just a hairstyle; they hold symbolic meaning and are deeply rooted in various cultures, particularly within the Rastafari movement and Black communities.

The term “dreadlock” has a strong connection to the Rastafari religion, while “locs” is a more general term for the hairstyle.
