Former Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, has condemned the recent attack on African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders in Benin City, Edo State, describing it as a deliberate attempt to suppress political participation.
The attack occurred on Tuesday during Akpata’s formal defection to the ADC, an event attended by former LP presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Reacting to it, the former NBA President said, “the violence sends a dangerous signal that engaging in politics could put citizens at risk”.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Akpata condemned the violence, saying, “This is a very dangerous message being sent to the electorate, that you will participate in this process at the risk of life and limb.”
He also criticised Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for dismissing the attack as an internal party matter, calling such remarks premature and unhelpful.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with leaders across the political spectrum urging security agencies to protect democratic processes and ensure justice for those affected.
Akpata’s comments re-enforces growing concerns over voter intimidation and the urgent need to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy.
Governor Okpebholo had earlier condemned the attack on African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders, attributing it to internal party conflict.
He expressed sympathy for the affected party members and emphasised that the attack was an escalation of internal disagreements.
Okpebholo also warned against importing thugs into the state for political purposes and assured that his administration would not tolerate such actions.
