Rights activist Aisha Yesufu has called for due process in handling the case of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) member stressed on the importance of upholding the rule of law and due process.
In a post he shared on X on Wednesday, Yesufu acknowledged that many may have disagreed with El-Rufai’s actions as governor, but stresses that justice should not be contingent on personal opinions or biases.
“Justice cannot depend on who we like or who we dislike,” Yesufu asserts, highlighting the need for a fair and transparent process.
She argued that if there is evidence against El-Rufai, the proper course of action is to charge him to court and present the evidence before a competent court of law.
Yesufu expressed concern over the indefinite detention of El-Rufai without trial, describing it as “unacceptable in a democratic society”.
She noted that every Nigerian, regardless of their stature or popularity, has the right to a fair hearing, which is a constitutional guarantee.
“If El-Rufai committed crimes, then prosecute him. Nigerians will support that,” Yesufu says, adding that the government should not detain individuals endlessly without due process.
She warned that such actions could be seen as persecution and sets a dangerous precedent for the country.
Yesufu concluded by urging the government to either charge El-Rufai to court or release him, emphasizing the need for justice to be done openly, lawfully, and transparently.
“Let justice be done openly, lawfully, and transparently. That is the only way a nation that claims to respect the rule of law should act,” she stated.
