Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 Kebbi State governorship election, officially declaring his candidacy.

Malami made the announcement in a Monday interview with DCL Hausa, expressing confidence in his widespread political backing across Kebbi State.

He pledged to tackle insecurity and revitalise Kebbi’s ailing agricultural sector if elected governor.

“INEC guidelines don’t permit mobilisation yet, but when the time comes, you will see that the people of Kebbi are with us.

“I have agreed to contest, and there is no retreat. God willing, we are going to win. We won’t disappoint those who believe in us,” he said.

The ex-AGF slammed the ruling APC, saying the party has worsened conditions in the North and abandoned farmers to struggle with insecurity.

Malami bemoaned how bandit attacks have forced farmers off their land, crippling food production in the process.

“Rice mills that operated for 20 years are shutting down due to bad policies favouring foreign companies,” Malami lamented, blaming state and federal governments for negligence and policy failures.

He explained that his ambition is motivated by a desire to “salvage Kebbi State,” restore security, rebuild the agricultural sector and defend the welfare of residents, insisting that his campaign is “not for personal gain but a rescue mission.”

Malami dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in July, saying his decision followed extensive consultations and soul-searching.

He also explained that it was not driven by personal ambition or anger, but by “love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily.
