The Lagos State Government has directed communities with gated streets to open them daily from 5am to 11pm during the festive period to ease traffic flow.

The government, in statement signed by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state Commissioner for Transportation, on Tuesday, warned that unauthorised gates and structures on public roads will be removed within seven days.

“”The Lagos State Government has directed communities operating gated streets to ensure that such gates are opened daily from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. during the festive period to ease traffic flow across the state,” the commissioner stated.

Osiyemi emphasised that the directive is in line with established state guidelines and aligns with the THEMES+ Agenda, prioritising free traffic flow, safety of lives and property, and ease of doing business in the state.

Also, the government called on owners of gates and structures erected on public roads without prior approval from the Ministry of Transportation to remove them within seven days.

“Any unauthorized gate or barrier must be dismantled within seven days of this announcement. Failure to comply will result in enforcement actions, including removal and penalties, in line with existing regulations,” Osiyemi warned.

The Ministry of Transportation observed a surge in unauthorised gates, particularly in the Lekki axis, which poses significant challenges to traffic flow, emergency response access, and overall public safety.

The statement clarified that “For gates and barriers with prior approval, compliance with guidelines is mandatory. Gates or barriers on public roads must remain fully open for public use from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.

“All approved gates or barriers must be manned by security personnel engaged by Community Development Associations (CDAs). Between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., gates may be closed but must be opened promptly in emergencies.”

In addition, Osiyemi urged residents and CDAs to comply with regulations to maintain a safe and accessible transportation network across the state. Failure to adhere will incur punitive measures, including fines and enforcement actions.

“The Lagos State Government remains committed to making tourism, commerce, and travel a pleasant experience for residents and visitors during the festive period and beyond,” the commissioner.
