The federal government on Tuesday confirmed that Nigerian workers stranded in the Central African Republic (CAR) are now in the custody of the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui.

In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government confirmed that the stranded nationals have been rescued.

“Good news. Stranded Nigerian workers in the Central African Republic have been successfully rescued and are currently in the custody of the Embassy of Nigeria in Bangui.

“A very big commendation to the staff of the Embassy and the Government of the Central African Republic for the successful operation,” the statement reads.

Furthermore, the ministry praised staff of the Nigerian embassy in CAR and also acknowledged the support of the country’s government in facilitating the operation.

Recall that a viral video had sparked outrage following the bad living conditions of the Nigerians in the Bambari region, about 850 kilometres from the capital.

The footage prompted urgent calls for government intervention.
