How to avoid LASTMA trouble on Lagos roads

1. Don’t Argue with LASTMA on the Road
If stopped, stay calm and polite. Even if you think you’re right, avoid creating a scene. Escalating things never ends well and might make things worse

2. Stay Out of BRT Lanes
BRT lanes are off-limits unless you’re driving an authorized vehicle. LASTMA monitors them closely, and violators are easy targets for fines or impoundment.

3. Avoid Illegal Parking
Only park where signs permit it. Parking on sidewalks, close to junctions, or blocking traffic can get your vehicle towed or clamped.

4. Respect Traffic Lights and Junctions
Many junctions in Lagos have automated monitoring now. Running a red light or blocking an intersection not only breaks the law—it gets you caught fast.

5. Know the Rules of the Road (and Actually Follow Them)
This can’t be overstated. Do not drive against traffic (one-way), Don’t stop or pick up passengers at unauthorized places, Obey traffic lights and road signs, and Respect lane markings and roundabout rules.

6. Avoid Hotspot Trouble Zones
Places like Oshodi, CMS, Ikeja, and Ojota are LASTMA strongholds. Be extra cautious there—obey all signs, and don’t get tempted to “just quickly turn” or “drop someone for 2 minutes.”

7. Don’t Offer Bribes:
Trying to “settle” on the spot is not only illegal but can backfire. If you believe you’re being unfairly treated, take it up through proper channels later.

8. Know Your Rights
LASTMA officers can’t Assault you physically or confiscate your keys without cause. If anything illegal happens, note the officer’s name or ID and report the incident.
