I was criticised for worshiping with Alexx Ekubo – Ebuka Songs

Ebuka Songs has opened up on the criticism he once received for worshipping with late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, saying he is thankful he ignored the backlash following reports of the actor’s death.

The gospel singer made the revelation in a Facebook post shared on Wednesday, a day after reports emerged that Ekubo died from complications linked to liver cancer.

His message formed part of the growing tributes from colleagues, fans and public figures mourning the actor’s passing.

Reflecting on a previous encounter with Ekubo, Ebuka Songs said some people attacked him at the time for associating publicly with the actor, questioning why he would worship alongside someone they viewed as an unbeliever.

“Some of you criticized me then. ‘Why are you worshipping with someone like that?’ ‘Why associate with an unbeliever?’ But today, I am grateful I ignored the noise,” he wrote.

According to the singer, while critics were busy making judgments from a distance, he had the rare privilege of witnessing what he described as a genuine spiritual moment in Ekubo’s life.

He suggested that many people often misunderstand others because they only see outward appearances and not the private battles or spiritual hunger within them.

“Because while some people were busy judging from a distance, I had the privilege of witnessing a soul encounter the presence of God,” he stated.

Ebuka Songs used the moment to remind Christians that their responsibility is to draw people closer to God through compassion, not to condemn them based on assumptions or appearances.

He said no one truly knows how much time another person has left or what transformation may already be taking place behind the scenes.

“This is a reminder that our assignment as believers is not to condemn people from afar, but to reach them with love. You do not know how much time anyone has left. You do not know what God is doing in the secret places of a man’s heart,” he said.

He further noted that people who are dismissed or criticised may be much closer to surrendering their lives to God than many imagine, stressing that spiritual change can happen suddenly through a single encounter.

“The same people you write off may be one encounter away from surrender. The same people you criticize may be deeply hungry for God. Jesus did not come for the already ‘perfect.’ He came for the lost,” he added.

The singer also challenged believers to examine whether their words and actions help bring others to faith or drive them further away through hostility and judgment.

“So before you drag people, ask yourself: are you drawing them closer to Christ, or pushing them further away?” he asked.

Paying his final respects, Ebuka Songs expressed gratitude for the worship moment he shared with the late actor and offered an emotional farewell.

“I am thankful for that worship moment. Thankful for grace. Thankful that mercy still reaches. Uncle Alex help me tell Jesus I love till we meet again,” he wrote.

He concluded his tribute with a message calling for greater compassion, evangelism and focus on faith, writing, “Less judgment. More love. More evangelism. More Jesus.”
