The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has ordered the temporary removal of officers heading units along the Lagos-Seme border corridor in response to online allegations accusing personnel of extorting travellers.

The decision follows the circulation of videos and reports online accusing immigration officials at the busy corridor of demanding illegal payments from travellers.

In response, the Service has also commenced an investigation aimed at identifying those implicated in the claims.

In a statement released on Friday by the Service’s spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, the Comptroller-General condemned the alleged actions, warning that such conduct would not be tolerated under her leadership.

“The Service unequivocally condemns the actions depicted in these reports, as such conduct is unacceptable and stands in direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service,” the statement read.

Although the number of officers affected and the specific commands involved were not disclosed, the agency said the probe would focus on uncovering all individuals linked to the allegations, with appropriate sanctions to be enforced without delay.

The Lagos-Seme route, which links Nigeria to Benin Republic, is a major gateway for trade and cross-border movement in the region. Despite its importance, it has repeatedly drawn complaints from travellers over harassment and extortion by officials.

The latest allegations gained traction after videos surfaced online, reigniting public concern over the conduct of personnel stationed at the border.

Reiterating its commitment to accountability, the Service assured Nigerians of its resolve to maintain professionalism and transparency across all points of entry and exit, while encouraging the public to report misconduct through its official platforms and contact channels.
