US President Donald Trump has continued his attack against Nigeria, describing the most populous black nation on earth as “a disgrace”.
Trump made the comments during an appearance on Fox News Radio’s ‘The Brian Kilmeade Show’ on Friday.
He said, “I think Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace. They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide. And I’m really angry about it.
“And we pay, you know, we give a lot of subsidy to Nigeria which we’re going to end up stopping.
“The government’s done nothing. They are very ineffective. They’re killing Christians at will. And you know until I got involved in it two weeks ago — nobody even talked about it.”
Trump’s remarks coincide with heightened US concern over Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, marked by violent attacks, mass kidnappings, and village raids by armed groups and extremists.
Last week, Boko Haram killed a Brigadier-General and some soldiers in an ambush in Borno State.
On Monday, bandits abducted 25 female students from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, Kebbi State, killing Hassan Makuku, the school’s Vice-Principal, and shooting Ali Shehu, a security guard.
Two days after the Kebbi incident, gunmen broke into a church in Eruku town in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing one persons and abducting worshippers.
On Friday, gunmen attacked St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwarra LGA of Niger State, abducting over 300 students and 12 staff members.
