The Lagos State chapter of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to uphold democratic principles by recognising the vital role of opposition parties in governance.

In a statement issued on Monday, IPAC’s Publicity Secretary, James Adeshina, stressed that inclusive governance and active political participation are essential for sustaining democracy in the state.

He noted that opposition parties play a crucial role in ensuring accountability, balance, and overall progress.

According to Adeshina, a thriving democracy depends on the inclusion and recognition of all political actors. He urged the ruling party to address rising concerns about a possible shift toward a one-party system, warning that such perceptions could undermine public confidence in governance.

He explained that IPAC, as a statutory advisory body, deemed it necessary to provide guidance aimed at strengthening democratic values and promoting good governance in Lagos State.

He emphasised that governance must remain people-focused, participatory, and reflective of the electorate’s mandate.

Adeshina further disclosed that the council, under the leadership of its re-elected chairman, Temilola Akinade, intends to maintain a constructive approach in engaging the government while ensuring it remains accountable to the people.

The council also urged the state government to demonstrate genuine commitment to its 2026 fiscal plan, tagged the “Budget of Shared Prosperity,” by ensuring its full implementation.

It stressed that policies and projects arising from the budget should directly impact citizens and address both immediate and long-term socio-economic challenges.

IPAC highlighted the need for sustained investment in human capital development, particularly targeting youth empowerment.

It noted that prioritising education, skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and capacity building would help tackle unemployment, foster innovation, and promote social stability.

Reaffirming its position, the council pledged continued collaboration with stakeholders to advance inclusive governance and build a more prosperous Lagos State.
