Authorities in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State have intercepted a group of unidentified individuals allegedly being transported under suspicious circumstances into parts of the council area.

The incident raised fresh concerns over security within the community.

The development was disclosed in a press statement issued on Tuesday by Nayo Jude Babatunde-Uyi, who confirmed that the operation was carried out through a joint effort between the local government authority and security agencies.

According to the statement, the individuals were reportedly being moved in large numbers towards the Ofere-Bunu axis of the LGA, prompting swift intervention by authorities following intelligence provided by local residents.

“Preliminary intelligence reports from vigilant residents indicated that the individuals were being conveyed into the forest territories of the LGA from Kano for an undisclosed business activity.

“Acting swiftly on this intelligence, the Local Government Authority, alongside security operatives, moved decisively to halt their movement and prevent their entry into the target community,” the statement said.

The intercepted individuals are currently in custody, with security agencies conducting detailed investigations to determine their identities, purpose, and possible links to criminal activities.

“At the time of this statement, the identities, mission, and true intentions of the individuals remain unclear. They are currently undergoing thorough interrogation and investigation,” the statement added.

Reacting to the incident, the Executive Chairman of the LGA, Zacchaeus Dare Michael, issued a strong warning to residents and groups involved in facilitating the movement or sheltering of suspicious persons within the area.

“Anyone found culpable of aiding or abetting criminal activities in any part of the LGA will be treated as a criminal. There will be no mercy for anyone who, in any way, sabotages the peace and security of our dear Local Government,” the chairman warned.

He condemned what he described as a growing trend of individuals profiting from aiding the influx of suspected criminal elements into local communities, stressing that such actions would no longer be tolerated.

The chairman also called on residents to remain vigilant and proactive in supporting security efforts by promptly reporting suspicious movements.

“Raise alarm when you see them. Stop them and alert the authorities. Identify suspicious movements, and we will ensure diligent investigation and prosecution,” he said.

In addition, transport operators were directed to exercise greater caution by verifying the identities and intentions of passengers traveling into the LGA.

The chairman warned that any vehicle found to be involved in conveying suspicious persons would be seized, with appropriate sanctions imposed on those responsible.

Reassuring residents, the local government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging continued collaboration between the public and security agencies to sustain peace and stability across the area.
