The Kogi State Government has vowed to secure the release of individuals abducted in recent incidents, including those in Bunu land, and strengthen the state’s security architecture.

Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, emphasising the government’s proactive approach to addressing insecurity.

According to Fanwo, the administration is gathering intelligence, deploying necessary measures, and working to put in place robust security structures to prevent future attacks.

“We understand what it is to have loved ones in the hands of the outlaws even for a day. We feel the pains with every family in this situation. We will win this battle and continue to strengthen our intelligence infrastructure to avert crimes in the State,” he said.

Fanwo appealed to residents to remain calm, provide information to aid the government’s efforts, and refrain from spreading panic.

“Let us come together as a state to end this. Let us unite as a people to defend our state. We are winning. We will achieve total victory. Do not spread panic, rather, give information that can help us win,” he urged.

The Commissioner assured that Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo is taking full responsibility for the security of Kogi State, investing heavily in enhancing combat readiness and intelligence infrastructure to combat crime.

He emphasised that the government would continue to communicate with the public, sharing updates and gathering feedback, without compromising its strategies. The government assured Kogi State will remain safe.

Kogi State, particularly Bunu land, has been plagued by a surge in violent attacks, with bandits targeting churches, communities, and highways.

In a recent incident, gunmen attacked two churches in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, killing a seminary graduate and abducting at least 37 worshippers, including children and elderly persons.

The attackers demanded a ransom of ₦600 million, sparking widespread fear and outrage.

The attacks have led to a mass exodus of residents, with many fleeing their homes and communities in search of safety.

The Chairman of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area, Barrister Zacheus Dare, had earlier vowed to tackle the menace of banditry, while the Kogi State Government has assured residents of its commitment to securing the release of abducted individuals and strengthening security.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also suspended all church activities in the area until further notice, citing credible security reports.
