The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has hailed the defection of former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing his entry into the party as a major boost to its growing political movement ahead of future elections.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said Kwankwaso’s decision to join the ADC has already begun to yield tangible results, with a significant spike in registrations recorded on its online membership platform within 24 hours.
According to the party, Kwankwaso has also directed his supporters across the country to align with the ADC, a move it said reflects an emerging coalition of Nigerians seeking an alternative political direction.
“The African Democratic Congress warmly welcomes the decision of former Governor of Kano State and Presidential Candidate of the NNPP in the 2023 general election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to join our party at this critical point in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement read.
The party noted that Kwankwaso’s defection underscores a growing consensus among citizens and political leaders on the need for a credible platform capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges.
It added that the former governor’s extensive experience in governance, grassroots appeal, and ability to mobilise support position him as a valuable addition to the party’s vision of national renewal.
“His decision reflects what many Nigerians already believe — that the country requires leadership that understands the daily struggles of its people and is prepared to take responsibility for meaningful change,” the statement added.
The ADC further disclosed that the high-profile defection was witnessed by key figures within the party, including National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola. Other prominent leaders present included Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Liyel Imoke, Emeka Ihedioha, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
According to the party, the presence of these political heavyweights signals unity within its ranks and reinforces its readiness to build a formidable platform ahead of future electoral contests.
Highlighting the immediate impact of Kwankwaso’s move, the ADC revealed that its digital registration portal recorded a sharp increase in new members within 24 hours, indicating rising public interest in the party.
“This surge is a clear indication that more Nigerians are beginning to embrace a new political path,” the statement said.
The party also used the opportunity to call on Nigerians, particularly Kwankwaso’s supporters, to seize the moment and join what it described as a collective effort to rebuild the nation.
“The ADC is more than a political party; it represents a shared commitment to building a country where dignity, opportunity, and trust in governance are guaranteed. Real change comes when citizens unite with purpose,” the statement concluded.
