Following the rise of insecurity in seven Local Government Areas in the Kwara South Senatorial District, the chairmen have ordered the immediate closure of all Kara (cattle) markets within the district.
The joint decision was disclosed in a statement by the executive chairmen of the seven local government areas.
The forum announced that the decision, effective Friday, September 19, 2025, was made in response to ongoing security challenges and follows extensive discussions with various stakeholders.
The chairmen are Hadji Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf (Ifelodun LGA), Hon. Benjamin Lanre Jolayemi (Isin LGA), Hon. Azeez Yakub (Irepodun LGA), Hon. Awelewa Olawale Gabriel (Ekiti LGA), Hon. James Fadipe (Oke-Ero LGA), Hon. Sulyman Olatunji (Offa LGA), and Hon. Akanbi Kamar Olarewaju (Oyun LGA).
They emphasised that the move was a proactive step aimed at protecting lives, property, and the general peace of the district.
“This measure is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the security architecture of the senatorial district. It is a proactive step, aimed at addressing emerging security concerns and ensuring the safety of residents, traders, and commuters,” they said.
While authorities have reported a recent decline in criminal activity due to ongoing “clean-up operations” by military and hybrid security forces, the shutdown is considered a necessary step to ensure long-term stability.
“While the invading criminals have been operationally decimated in the last few weeks, clean-up operations by the military and hybrid operatives are still ongoing,” the statement read.
Also, other produce markets in the district must now close by 6:00 PM on market days, according to the directives of the chairmen.
The local government chairmen acknowledged the potential economic impact of the decision but emphasized that the safety of residents is their top priority.
The councils assured the public that they are working closely with the Kwara State government and security agencies to restore lasting peace to the region, adding that the closure will be reviewed periodically, and the markets will be reopened once a “conducive environment is guaranteed.”
The chairmen urged all residents to cooperate with security operatives and governmental efforts to help restore peace.
