Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has officially announced his candidacy for the position of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Lamido announced his decision in a Monday post on his verified Facebook page, stating that he would visit the party’s national headquarters to purchase his nomination form.
He wrote, “By the grace of God, I shall today, Monday, 27th October 2025, by 11 a.m., be at Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, to purchase the nomination form to run for the office of National Chairman.”
Lamido, who is a prominent PDP member and former Foreign Affairs Minister expressed his commitment to rebuilding and strengthening the party ahead of future elections.
“My commitment to democracy and resolve to restore our dear party to its old glory is unstoppable,” he added.
The PDP, Nigeria’s ruling party from 1999 to 2015, is set to elect a new National Chairman at its upcoming national convention.
Lamido’s announcement follows the endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) by northern PDP stakeholders as their preferred candidate for the position.
At its 102nd National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja on August 25, the PDP decided to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, reserving the National Chairman position for the North.
However, factions allied to Lamido and another senior leader, Nyesom Wike, have rejected Turaki’s endorsement, arguing that the process lacked proper consultation.
The split indicates growing tensions within the PDP over its path to the 2027 elections, as the party seeks both internal unity and credible leadership.
The party will hold its 2025 Elective National Convention between November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
PDP, in a statement issued on October 25, 2025, named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee to vet aspirants for national offices ahead of the convention.
According to the statement by the party’s National Convention Organising Committee and signed by its Chairman, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who is also the Governor of Adamawa State, the screening exercise will take place on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
The committee will be chaired by Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a former Ondo State governorship candidate and respected legal luminary.
