The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, has embarked on a groundbreaking journey to revolutionise its waste management system.

This was made known by Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos commissioner for environment and water resources in a post he made on X.

Wahab noted that in line with the THEMES+ agenda of Governor Sanwoolu-Olu, the state is transitioning from a linear to a cyclical waste management system, leveraging innovative technologies and partnerships to achieve sustainability.

He said, “Through strategic partnerships with reputable organizations, including Harvest Waste Consortium from the Netherlands, Lafarge Africa PLC, and JONSPONG Group of Companies, Lagos State aims to significantly reduce the amount of waste entering landfills.

“The collaborations will introduce cutting-edge waste treatment solutions, such as converting nearly 3,000 tonnes of waste daily into energy, collecting non-recyclable combustible waste, and establishing Material Recovery Facilities.

“The ultimate goal is ambitious: to achieve zero waste entering landfills, enabling the gradual decommissioning of landfills across the state. This milestone marks another significant step in the government’s quest for a greener and cleaner Lagos. With unwavering commitment, the state is poised to redefine waste management and create a more sustainable future for its citizens.”
