The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has conducted an enforcement operation on Lagos Island, resulting in the seizure of several waste carts and the arrest of an individual involved in unauthorised waste disposal.
According to a statement by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, on Monday, the operation followed targeted surveillance of the area.
Sanusi disclosed that the carts were intercepted at dawn by LAWMA enforcement officers during a coordinated operation aimed at disrupting unregulated waste movement and preventing the re-emergence of illegal dump points in locations previously cleared by the Authority.
During the operation, LAWMA enforcement officers seized waste carts at Isale-Eko.
Additionally, an individual, Muritala Suleiman, a 42-year-old male from Zamfara State, was apprehended at approximately 1:31 a.m. for illegally dumping waste at Tinubu Square, Lagos Island.
“LAWMA’s early-hour monitoring remains a critical enforcement tool, as illegal dumping activities are often carried out during periods of low visibility,” the statement said.
According to the MD/CEO LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the sustained enforcement activities strengthen deterrence and protect stabilised sites from renewed abuse as Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement operatives are strategically deployed across the State to eradicate persistent black spots and ensure sustainability along major corridors.
The Authority urged residents to comply with approved waste disposal channels and support efforts to keep public spaces clean.
