Makinde declares presidential ambition

Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, on Thursday formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, while calling for major political reforms and stronger opposition unity ahead of the polls.

Makinde made the announcement during a mega rally in Ibadan, where he also unveiled a new alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party and the Allied Peoples’ Movement.

The event attracted a large turnout of party faithful, political stakeholders, supporters and coalition partners, as opposition groups intensified preparations for the next general election cycle.

Speaking at the rally, Makinde said Nigeria’s political and economic situation required urgent intervention and renewed commitment from citizens.

“Nigeria is at a critical point, and the time has come for citizens to move from being spectators to active participants in shaping the future of the country,” he said.

The governor expressed concern over what he described as the nation’s declining fortunes, insisting that broad-based reforms were necessary to restore confidence in governance and public institutions.

He also criticised the state of opposition politics in the country, saying stronger collaboration among parties was essential to deepen democracy and provide Nigerians with credible alternatives.

“No single party can change the country alone. We must come together to build a stronger democratic front capable of delivering real progress,” Makinde stated.

Announcing the partnership between the PDP and APM, the governor said the coalition would field candidates for all elective offices in 2027, including the presidency, governorships, National Assembly and state assemblies.

He described the arrangement as a “grand alliance” and a strategic platform aimed at repositioning Nigeria for national renewal.

“This alliance is a political handshake for a better future. It is about reshaping leadership and giving Nigerians hope again,” he added.

Political observers said Makinde’s declaration could influence ongoing consultations within the PDP and other opposition blocs, as early alignments begin ahead of party primaries.

Supporters at the venue welcomed the announcement, describing it as a bold move capable of energising the opposition and reshaping conversations around the 2027 presidential race.

Further reactions are expected from political actors across the country following Makinde’s formal entry into the contest.
