The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended Nigerian international broadcaster and producer, Gbolahan Macjob, for the global success of his film, ‘Ireke’.
The film has set several international records for a Nigerian film in local language, including being the first Nigerian local language movie to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
In a statement issued by the Commission’s Spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa described Ireke as an epic tale of African slave rebellion in the Caribbean that has captivated a global audience. She noted that the film’s exceptional viewing records are a testament to Macjob’s talent and dedication to showcasing Nigerian history and culture to the world.
Dabiri-Erewa praised Macjob’s background, highlighting that his skills were honed in his hometown of Abeokuta before his sojourn abroad. She commended Macjob’s commitment to uplifting Nigeria’s global image and developing domestic talents through numerous donations towards broadcasting training and hands-on sessions.
The NIDCOM boss reiterated the Commission’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian diaspora community in achieving personal fulfillments abroad and at home. She described Macjob as an illustration of a good combination of home quality and international exposure, and noted that the timing of the film’s release is indicative of Nigeria’s reinvigorated rise as a respected member of the global community.
Ireke has won several awards and accolades, including being the Nollywood film with the longest and largest screening in the United Kingdom (UK), the first Nollywood film to have a worldwide premiere in London, Lagos, and Abeokuta all on the same day, and the only Nollywood film to have a press screening ahead of its premiere. The film’s global success is a testament to the growing recognition of Nigerian talent and creativity on the world stage.
