Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup have been dashed as they suffered a defeat to DR Congo, while also losing to the country during a penalty shootout.

The Super Eagles, led by Victor Osimhen, had a strong start, taking the lead in the 3rd minute through Frank Onyeka’s goal. However, DR Congo equalized in the 32nd minute through Meschack Elia, and the match went into extra time.

Despite a valiant effort, Nigeria couldn’t find the winning goal, and the match was decided by penalties. DR Congo emerged victorious, securing their spot in the inter-confederation playoff for the 2026 World Cup.

The loss has started generating reactions from citizens.

Nigeria had hoped to return to the World Cup after missing out on Qatar 2022.
