Shehu Sani, a civil rights activist and former Senator, has stated that terrorist groups responsible for killing or kidnapping innocent Nigerians should be eliminated to achieve peace in the country.
He emphasised that such groups do not deserve mercy and must be dealt with decisively.
Sani also called on United States lawmakers to conduct deeper investigations into terrorist groups operating in Nigeria and designate them appropriately to ensure effective action.
In a statement on his X handle on Thursday, the ex-Senator lamented the ongoing war by terrorists against innocent Nigerians, saying:
“Any group that picks up arms to kill or kidnap innocent people under any guise deserves to be designated as a terrorist group.”
He added, “But the US lawmakers need to do deeper and broader research to get their facts right.”
Defending the former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, Sani said, “Kwankwaso has never been an extremist, nor has he condoned, supported, or encouraged any act of religious persecution, violence, or discrimination. His conduct while in office can be verified.”
He further noted that leadership of groups like Miyetti Allah and Kautal Hore are, in some cases, themselves victims of banditry and terrorism.
Sani concluded, “A bill with political, historical, and global significance must be the product of meticulous, intelligent, and comprehensive research.”
Sani’s stance comes amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, including Islamist insurgency and armed kidnapping gangs.
